HIGHLIGHTS
The UN Conference on Financing for Development that took place in Monterrey, Mexico from 18 to 22 March 2002 was hailed as a landmark conference in the global effort to eradicate poverty. The “Monterrey Consensus” was adopted with the acknowledgement that Official Development Assistance (ODA) plays an essential role for the improvement of the environment, support for education, health and public infrastructure development. Besides the customary pledge of funds for financing development, the conference participants raised the important issue of addressing systematic issues of enhancing the coherence and consistency of the international monetary, financial and trading systems in support of development and the promotion of good governance .
